Siding Post 6: Almost Painted

This is probably the last you’ll see of my siding before the back side is really done. My agonizing over paint colors is done and culminated in going with the ballsiest suggestion I got, painting the siding (a slightly grayed out) navy blue. One criticism this idea got was that it would make my house look too Cape Coddy. I don’t really see this as a problem. If I could put an acre or two of dunes in the alley that would be even better, though it would also make my house farther from the subway.

And the beadboard on the “porch ceiling” is light blue. I had to wash off the residue from the tar paper that was nailed to it with paint thinner, which paired nicely with the Hop Devil I was drinking. And then it needed two tubes of caulk. I still missed a few holes, so I might have to caulk a weensy bit more in between coats. But here’s what I’ve got so far:

And the paint:

P1040417

P1040420

P1040421

And yes, that is the last piece of back band I needed installed in that last photo! Anyways, I think I’m happy with all the colors. And I know I’m happy with the dark blue. This probably means that my friend Amy is in fact always right. I agonized a bit, like I do with every decision I have to make. I was driving through the new suburbs after work last week and I couldn’t help but think of the song Little Boxes, except we have to change the lyrics to “There’s a beige one and a beige one and a beige one and a beige one…” (Also, the identical vinyl siding is ticky tackier than anything that existed in 1962) So this helped made navy blue less scary. And one more photo. If it hadn’t been blue it might have had to be this! These houses, by the way, are so good for my property value I’m not even losing money on the house anymore.

So next time, back to interior finish work?

When you said navy blue I thought oh no don’t do it. I was thinking your navy blue was going to be much darker. But I like the color you chose, Good for you taking risks. I can’t wait to see the finished product

I tried to crop a few photos for a fake view of the finished product. But I’ll make sure to get nice photos when the fence and scaffold come down and before the screens and air conditioner go in. That’ll be the best it will ever look, except for the nasty green stucco that I have to live with until who knows when.

I wouldn’t call this navy blue. I would call it colonial blue-gray, or maybe Wedgwood. The shutters and garage door panels on my house are close to that that color (Benjamin Moore Jamestown Gray), so of course I approve.

I love the blue! I too would not call that navy – I think of navy as being much darker. Anyway, it’s so nice to know someone who is always right! It will save you time over your next agonizing decision. I bet your mom loves the blue too. 😉

I’m glad you trusted me. You need to get a picture a bit further away if you can, when it’s slightly overcast – the color is different in each one! I like the darker ones. Now, paint your door chartreuse and we’ll have something!

Remember the existing door is toast, and the new one will be sliders. Of course if I had more space I’d much rather have French doors. Old drafty ones, ideally. But the slider is a concession to my space constraints. I have a beat up bench that’s been in my family for 5 generations that I was thinking of painting chartreuse.

I like this color-very elegant- It’s funny how colors run in popularity, I decided to paint our house in the Farrow & Ball Hague Blue and it seems everyone else is doing blue or thinking about it. Odd coincidence
